Covert Operation
Opening Saturday August 29, 6-9pm
A collection of work born out of a close attention to production and manufacturing, Covert Operation presents an undertaking of the uneasy position of intimately observing a system while remaining a working part of it.
Assembling fractured images and detrital material serves as a method of understanding these networks and their implications while remaining subject to their rules, rhythms, and demands.
Mammoth spectacles of fulfillment and optimization work to serve a flattening of culture at large; a dizzying and disorienting acceleration works at speeds that render processes of making increasingly invisible.
By being within these structures, becoming one of their many working parts, one can’t help but begin to recognize the patterns of automation elsewhere: in working life, entertainment, convenience, and the growing effort to reproduce performances of reality.
The work emerges from the feeling of occupying the role of a ‘double-agent’- participating in the maintenance of a culture while privately noticing the mechanisms that sustain it, consistently paying close attention while continuing to perform the most necessary task: not looking too closely.
